Looking through a Literary Lense

Divide into small groups. Each group is assigned one of the 3 literary lenses. This lense will be used to analyze and interpret the novel.

Watch the trailer for Disney's Brave.

As a group develop a brief explanation of what the movie is about as seen through your literary lense.
Present these explanations to the class.

Example:
If I was doing Beauty and the Beast from a Feminist viewpoint.....

This is the story of a girl trapped in the repressed role of caretaker to her father. His choices end up forcing her to shift from one male-dominated household to another as she gives up her personal independence to become a prisoner of the Beast, an arrogant monach cursed by an enchantress attempting to teach him about the value of human charity. Belle refuses to conform to her traditional gender role as she stands up to the Beast's attempts at domination. Interestingly, Belle holds all of the power in this story, as it is only her love that can break the Beast's curse. Although the Beast begins their relationship by asserting himself as the ruler of the household, it is only his decision to bend to Belle's independent nature that moves the story forward. No longer restricted by society's view, Belle breaks the bonds of her gender and of her "provential life" and falls in love with the one creature that recognizes her unique talents and does not expect her to conform to the norm.
